Affordable counselling with trainee therapists
September 2026
One of the most common reasons people put off counselling is money. Private therapy can feel like a luxury, and NHS waiting lists can be long. That is why we have expanded the team to include therapists at different stages of qualification — so more people can access support at a fee that feels manageable.
Lower fees do not mean lower standards
Every therapist in the practice, whether senior or in training, works within the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions. Trainee therapists are on accredited courses, receive regular clinical supervision, and only see clients they are competent to work with. Their work is discussed in supervision, but your identity is always protected.
In other words, the difference is usually experience, not safety. A trainee therapist may have fewer years behind them, but they bring fresh training, close supervision and genuine commitment to their client work.
Who you might see and what it costs
We have kept the fee structure simple and transparent. Sessions are 50 minutes unless arranged otherwise:
| Therapist level | Fee | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Senior Accredited Therapist | £70 | 50 minutes |
| Accredited Therapist | £60 | 50 minutes |
| Level 5 qualified therapist | £50 | 50 minutes |
| Supervised therapist in training | £40 | 50 minutes |
A small number of reduced-fee places are also reserved each week for students, trainee therapists and people on lower incomes. If you are unsure which tier is right for you, we can discuss it during your free enquiry call.
What does "supervised" actually mean?
Supervision is a confidential, professional space where therapists reflect on their work. For trainee therapists, this happens regularly with an experienced supervisor. It is not about judging the therapist; it is about making sure clients receive the best possible care and that the therapist is supported in their development.
Anything discussed in supervision is anonymised. Your personal details, name and story are not shared. The same confidentiality rules apply whether you see a senior therapist or a trainee.
Is a trainee therapist right for me?
Trainee and newly qualified therapists can be a good fit for many people, including:
- ·People who want affordable, regular support while they are on a budget
- ·Students and trainee counsellors who need personal therapy as part of their course
- ·Anyone experiencing mild to moderate anxiety, low mood, stress, grief or life transitions
- ·People who are comfortable working with a therapist who is still in training
If your needs are more complex — for example, severe trauma, active self-harm, or a recent psychiatric crisis — we may suggest starting with a more experienced therapist and can discuss this openly during your enquiry.
What to expect from a lower-fee session
Face-to-face sessions take place in the same comfortable rooms at 1 Park Lane, Allestree, Derby. Online and telephone sessions are also available.
Your sessions are private, and the same limits to confidentiality apply whatever your therapist's qualification level.
Trainee therapists receive regular supervision with an experienced practitioner.
We check in regularly so the work stays helpful, and you can move to a more experienced therapist if that becomes useful.
How to book a lower-fee session
The easiest first step is a free 15-minute enquiry call. We will talk briefly about what you are looking for, answer your questions, and match you with the most suitable therapist and fee level. There is no obligation to continue.
Affordable counselling is now available in Allestree, Derby, Duffield, Belper, Mickleover, Littleover, Darley Abbey, Quarndon and Repton, as well as online across the UK. If cost has been the barrier that kept you from reaching out, this may be the right time.
